This Fresh Tuna Salad Recipe is a spin off of a meal my mom would always make for us and it was simple and delicious. Tuna, chopped onions and tomato mixed with mayo and ketchup. She would fry up some tostadas or we would use white bread to scoop up the tuna salad. Pickled jalapeños and a squeeze of lime – and we had ourselves a feast!
Mexican moms are like wizards in the kitchen. When a lot of people would look in a fridge and think it’s empty they make it work. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized tuna was what we ate when it was almost time to go grocery shopping again. We always had cans of tuna in the pantry, ketchup and mayo in the fridge and tomato and onions are pretty much staples in a Mexican household.
Since the 90’s the US food system has continued it’s downward spiral and the foods we grew up with are no longer the same. Everything that is shelf stable is full of high fructose corn syrup, vegetable oils, GMO sugars, colorings, fillers just to name a few. The argument of “I grew up eating that and I’m fine” is not valid. Are you really fine? Headaches, anxiety, digestive distress, high blood pressure, diabetes <—- these issues are not normal and if you suffer from any one of them – you are not fine.
I’ve gone a little off topic, lol. Well what is one to do? All these household staples are full of junk. Well, in the last few years a lot of companies has sprouted up to fill this need! Companies like Primal Kitchen, Woodstock Farms, Wild Planet, Chosen Foods are producing kitchen staples with high quality organic ingredients. For example, Primal Kitchen makes the most ah-mazing Avocado Mayo and Avocado Oil, these are two staples in my kitchen. Woodstock Farms makes their ketchup with organic tomato, sugar and spices – pretty basic which is great!
All of the companies that I mentioned above sell on amazon, check them out in my amazon store HERE! The ingredients are also hyperlinked – you can click on them and it will take you directly to the item I use.

- 1 roma tomato, diced
- 1 persian cucumber, diced
- 1/4 of a small purple onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon of mayo (I like this one HERE)
- 1 tablespoon of ketchup (optional, make sure you use an organic ketchup to ensure you are not being dosed with high fructose corn syrup or GMO sugar, I like this one HERE)
